Newsletter -October 2024
We had a disrupted start to the month, on Friday 4 October we took Rumours Abound to Moonee Valley for a 955 Challenge race, due to persistent lightening, after 3 races were run the rest of the meeting was abandoned, so we headed home without a start. Then on 8 October we took Majestic Deel to Kilmore for a 2000 metre maiden, we were in race three, after race two when the barriers were being positioned for race three somehow the barrier stalls crashed through the outside rail causing damage to the barrier stalls that couldn’t be repaired on the day, so another treck home without a start. I think I have now just about experienced the entire set of reasons for abandoned race meetings and races; barrier mishaps, too hot, too wet, roll poly bushes blowing on the track, what next!
October was a relatively light month with only 8 starters; we were able to record one win, one 3rd placing and one 4th placing. Boy From Tennessee was able to break through for his maiden win at Albury on the12th of October, he has been consistent, from 6 starts he has recorded 1 win, 1 second and 2 thirds. He has since been sold and has left the stable, we wish the new connections good luck with him. Ti Tree Royal showed a lot of promise at his debut run in the race won by Boy From Tennessee. From an outside barrier he raced greenly but was able to make his way to the front at the 800m and then shared the lead, on straightening he kicked clear but after doing a lot of work early was unable to hold off the winner and second place getter, running third. It may have been all a bit much as he raced a bit flat at his next start, nevertheless I think he has a future.
Spring Carnival
The Melbourne and Sydney spring carnivals are in full swing. Our stable jockey Craig Williams (ha ha ha) had a great day on Everest day winning both the Everest and the Kosciuszko.
Asgarda the Doug Gorrel trained SDRA hope ran a creditable 5th in the Kosciuszko.
What an exciting horse Pride of Jenni is to watch, her tear away tactics capture the attention of the racing public, wishing for her to hang on. It brings to mind some of the other great front running middle and long distance stayers of the past who adopted similar tactics, such as Vo Rogue, Might and Power and Sunline. Those of my generation might remember Scotch and Dry and the hurdler Lots of Time as well. There must be others that slip my mind.
The four days of Flemington will no doubt deliver a new era of stars and heroes.

Leasing Racehorses:
Leasing provides the opportunity to enjoy racing without the upfront cost of the purchase of a horse. Generally owners lease out horses they wish to retain for breeding or are horses purchased as yearlings or passed in by the breeder and the owner wishes to defray the cost of racing the horse. The average lease term is 2 years and in most cases can be extended, the owners fee is generally 25% of all prize money but may vary up or down depending on the horse and the owners requirements. The average cost of a horse in training is $3,500 per month therefore the average cost of a 10% lease share is $350 per month with shares available from 5% up to 100%. I have prepared a Q&A document providing information on leasing, if you would like a copy let me know or call me for further information.
